The flyschs of Socoa

The photograph below was taken not far from Socoa, on the Basque coast (Aquitaine). It shows the erosion of cliffs under the onslaught of the Atlantic waves. A slow process that began at the end of the Cretaceous period. At that time, the flyschs reached heights of some 400 meters. Read more ...

The flyschs of Socoa

Under the empire of the wind,
the entire surface of the ocean
initiates a wide movement.

It appears to be undulating.
- swirling and scumming
when approaching the continent.

This constant outpouring
reduces the slightest escarpment
into sediments. Definitively.

At the end of the Cretaceous, though,
those flyschs were impressive.
- 400 meters to the highest point.

Born from the piling up
of marine sediments
at the edge of the continent,

their folds, their creases,
reflect the elevation of the Pyrenees,
i.e., the movements of the Earth's crust.
