For over a month now, daytime temperatures have been above 35°C. The nights, meanwhile, are tropical. The air is thick with humidity, as shown in this photograph of the Montagne Noire (Occitanie, France) taken this Wednesday morning. The spruce, pine, beech, and chestnut trees covering its slopes continue to draw water from the ground and release it into the atmosphere . But for how much longer?

Beneath the heat dome, the Autan blows: a wind coming from the nearby Mediterranean Sea, whose gusts intensify the warming of the atmosphere and the dryness of the soil. As evidenced by these few wisps of smoke, photographed at sunset in Revel (Occitanie, France). And to think that summer has only just begun!

On last March 3, the alignment of the planets caused the Earth to eclipse its natural satellite, the Moon. The next day, driven by a strong Autan wind, a thick cloud of dust from the Sahara Desert partially eclipsed our Sun, dimming its usual brightness. This was followed by this surreal sunset ...

While preparing an issue all about citizen science, Philippe Lesaffre, editor-in-chief and co-founder of the independent media outlet Le Zéphyr, interviewed volunteers from environmental organizations like the LPO (Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux, the French branch of BirdLife International)—which I'm a part of. He asked me about the nature and meaning of this commitment to Nature.
