Saissac over the centuries

Saissac over the centuries

In this area delimited by the wooded foothills of the Montagne Noire, there was once a medieval castle, the oldest of them, one of the largest as well: the Château de Saissac - named after one of its famous owners, Bertran de Saissac (1140 - 1202), the protector of the troubadours and of the « perfect » Cathars.

The castle of Saissac

Eleven centuries after its completion, this area which subtly blends the mineral with the plant and which offers a magnificent view of the Pyrenees chain appears to have undergone a complete metamorphosis.

Once perfectly integrated into its environment, this area has, over time, evolved into a totally independent island, offsetting its fossil emissions through the design and the installation of verdant surfaces. Thus, the three square towers that make up the original monument have given way to hundreds of more or less imposing buildings: buildings blackened by coal since the industrial era coexist with modern, greener towers. In addition, the air currents generated by this vertical architecture carry fine particles, covering the sky with an opaque white veil. Finally, the contours of this modern, « high-tech » castrum now form the only visible relief accessible to its residents.

Eleven centuries after its completion, this green bower has undergone a complete metamorphosis, adapting to the constraints of its time and constraining its environment as much as possible.
