Hommage à Barbara Adams

point Juan José Castillos : "Report on the 2000 Poznan symposium" (Article en Anglais)

This Symposium lasted four days, between the 29th August and the 2nd September 2000, and the papers dealt mainly with the Western Desert, Predynastic Egypt and the Sudan. Due to the lack of concern by the VARIG Airline with their passengers'needs, I arrived one day late at this Symposium, so I will not comment on most of the papers of the first day which I could not attend, for the few that will be included I thank the speakers for giving me a written copy of their dissertation or, as in one case, because the paper was almost the same as the one delivered in the Cairo Congress. This Report consists of my personal notes on the papers I attended and reflects my personal perceptions and interests, that can be later compared with the Proceedings of this Symposium ...

point Marcelo Campagno : "From Kin-Chiefs to God-Kings - Emergence and consolidation of the state in ancient Egypt" (Article en Anglais)

Explicative factors which try to answer the question about the reasons of the emergence of the State can be grouped according to two basic criteria : concensus and violence. In effect, on the one hand, we have factors based on the assumption that the emergence of a social group which monopolizes the means of coercion occurs with the general consent of the society. On the other hand, we have factors based on the opposite assumption : the State emerges by means of the subjection of a social group by another one ...

point Richard A. Lobran & Valérie de Liedekerke : "Elephants in ancient Egypt and Nubia" (Article en Anglais)

This article examines the presence of elephants in civilizations of the ancient Nile valley, where they were hunted and distributed to Egypt and to the Classicial Greco-Roman world for ivory, amusement and military purposes. The full study of elephants requires diverse multi-disciplinary research on their evolution, taxonomy, extinction, climate change, the history of human-elephant interactions, and modern issues relating to elephant and ivory policy. This regional view of the past illuminates some of the deep roats of these modern issues in human-elephant relations ...

point Jorge Roberto Ogdon : "A propos of certain gestures in funeral scenes from the New Kingdom" (Article en Anglais)

The theme of the body postures and gestures in ancient Egypt has always been an interesting and difficult subject. It is well-known that the varied poses adopted by the body may have many different meanings for the human beings, whether from the psychological, social/individual, cultural and even religious points of view. Therefore, their study and proper understanding is a major matter for a better comprehension of the ancient Egyptian Thought. Quite recently, Dr. R.H. Wilkinson has made a significant contribution to the analysis of this aspect of Egyptian culture, remarking the fact that one must be very careful at the moment of defining what is a gesture owning a precise meaning and what is not ...

I made light of the darkness for it ... It was I who again begot the Chaos-gods in chaos, in the Abyss, in darkness and in gloom" (CT, I, spell 76).

The present part of the series "Aegypto-Afroasiatica" has been prepared in memoriam Eva Grigassy, at the same time also as a gift in honour of her loving husband, Prof. Lazlo Kakosy with the best health wishes. "Aegypto-Afroasiatica" is to collect new etymologies for Egyptian roots as compared with the lexical stock of the related Afro-asiatic daughter language branches (Semitic, Berber, Cushito-Omotic, Chadic). This series of papers has been running since 1995. The new results published in these papers issue from my work on the long-range project for the first comprehensive etymological dictionary of Egyptian (=EDE, Leiden, since 1999, Brill). For the consonant correspondences of the Afro-Asiatic branches cf. esp. EDE I 263-270 ; Takacs 2001, 114-115. The numbering of the etymological entries is running continuously from "Aegypto Afroasiatica I" ...
